“Keep the Kitchen Light On and the Living Room Dim but Not Purple”

Child’s evening demands grow more baroque

First, it became important to leave the kitchen light on—not just gently, but at full blast, with her bedroom door open.

Then we dimmed the lights in the living room overnight and accidentally left the smart bulb in our entryway at a setting that looked vaguely lavender, which freaked her out.

Then we left the lights bright in the living room, which she also hated.

Then, having figured out the living room and the kitchen lights, we thought we had it figured out.

Then it rained one night and the sound of the rain on her air conditioner annoyed her.

It has been like this for months now. Every night. Even when it rains.

And yet she sleeps.
