“We Don’t Talk About the Past In This Family”

I’m not sure what prompted Kina’s little observation about the past this morning, but it seemed timely and was extremely on brand. What happens today, what we try today, is all we have. The past, for example, is the last eighteen months of haphazard school in our living room. Today, by contrast, is the day we met eight kids from Kina’s new classroom on the playground and packed her backpack for the first day of school. We will not concern ourselves with tomorrow any more than we will the past. That’s what the newspaper is for.

Speaking of which, there remains a huge question hanging in the air in our household about the future of this paper, whose daily publication has relied heavily on not having to get out of the house by 8:15 every single morning. We will strive to keep the presses running, but things might get sloppy. I trust you all will understand.

Kina was unusually excited to draw today’s Parade, a depiction of our trip to the municipal pool yesterday, featuring some unusually detailed faces—particularly on Laurea, who is apparently wearing glasses but looks thrilled to be drifting in the water, which she always actually is.
