I was pleased to learn that they “departmentalize” the fifth grade, meaning that teachers focus on a single subject, and the class groups move from room to room and teacher to teacher. When I met with the fifth grade teachers at Kina’s school last week, they all seemed so passionate about the subjects they taught, and I am so excited for Kina that she gets to spend an hour with these teachers every single day to fall in love with math, writing, reading, science, and social studies (or some subset of them). Kina, for her part, knows this is different and meaningful, and while it was not ideal that she was sick yesterday, she popped out of bed this morning with so much excitement, fever free and ready to march around the school like the champ she is. Love this kid.
